Game Change – Review

On Sunday HBO premiered the docudrama “Game Change“. This movie is about the campaign of John Mccain and the meteoric rise of Sarah Palin during the 2008 presidential campaign.  I must say that I really enjoyed the film. Nothing in the film was new news to me but it may be to some. The most [...]

The most intriguing part for me was when it was brought to light that Sen. McCain was totally against attacking then Sen. Obama about his ties to Jeremiah Wright and only caved on the Bill Ayers situation after his team constantly poked and prodded him into doing it. He did not expect the backlash that would occur. Another thing of note is how Sarah Palin sort of orchestrated the whole, “real America” and put the idea that then Sen. Obama was a terrorist and this evil person. All the terrorist and Muslim rhetoric started with her.

Sarah Palin is painted as a dumb, inarticulate show piece that was used to gain votes. This plan backfired. They realized that she knew nothing about anything outside of Alaska and that all she cared about was Alaska.  while she showed flashes of brilliance, overall she was a wash. As the movie progresses we begin to realize that Sarah Palin no longer cares about the campaign but moreover about her own future.

Sarah Palin is definitely not a fan of this film because of the way she was portrayed but the film is a definite a must see and is a glimpse into the mindset of John McCain, Sarah Palin and the republican party.

What is a Super PAC?

I’m sure you’ve heard this term thrown around lately and wondered to yourself ‘what exactly is a super pac’? Believe me you are not alone. Not too many people know what a super pac is and some of the people that do know what it is can’t tell you what they do. It’s pretty tricky so I’ll try my best explain.

Okay so a super pac is a Political Action Commitee.  They become “super” once they have received more than $1,000. What this organization does is campaigns for or against a particular candidate.  Now this super PAC is not supposed to have any affiliation with any candidate or coordinate/speak with any of the people that they campaign for. They campaign in terms of phone banks, attack ads on television, radio or billboards and things of that nature.

Now you may be wondering ‘where does this money come from’? Well, normally an individual can contribute only $5,000 per year to a PAC or Political Action Committee. Any donations collected that are over $200 from a single donor has to be filed with the FEC and their name must be published. But what if I have a billionaire friend that wants to donate more than $5,000 or doesn’t want people to know that they donated? There are always loopholes around this. You see if a super PAC establishes a 501(c)(4) then they do not have to list who the donors are because it is a non-profit organization. you see that? you can literally donate millions to the super PAC by way of the 501(c)(4).  you see when you donate to a non profit it is tax deductible and they don’t have to name their donors.

let’s say for example, Mitt Romney’s Super PAC is under investigation for some type of fraud or people just want to know who’s behind him. When asked his campaign can say that they recieve funding from their 501(c)(4) then when asked who funds it they can say that it is a nonprofit. these donors are always anonymous. There are ways around everything.

A super PAC can be funded by one person making a large donation, in the case of Rick Santorum, or by lots of people making small donations, as in the case with Barack Obama.  In either case, a super pac is the group responsible for the attack ads that you see all over the news and radio as well as the people calling you asking for your support.

Got it?

Adele Belittles Newt Gingrich (video)

During what seems to be a soundcheck at the Grammy Awards on Sunday February 12, 2012 ( they say it was during a commercial break) Adele reworks her smash hit “Someone Like You” to talk about U.S. Presidential Candidate Newt Gingrich, renaming the masterpiece “Anyone but Newt”. She goes in on his personal life such as his infidelity as well as his political misfirings like when he said that they poor children should work as janitors at schools. the song is amazing in itself but the reworked version is great as well. I may be biased because I love her voice but she can do no wrong with this remix.

The 2012 State of the Union Address (Transcript)

Office of the Press Secretary

For Immediate Release
January 24, 2012

Remarks by the President in State of the Union Address

United States Capitol
Washington, D.C.

9:10 P.M. EST

THE PRESIDENT:  Mr. Speaker, Mr. Vice President, members of Congress, distinguished guests, and fellow Americans:

Last month, I went to Andrews Air Force Base and welcomed home some of our last troops to serve in Iraq.  Together, we offered a final, proud salute to the colors under which more than a million of our fellow citizens fought — and several thousand gave their lives.

We gather tonight knowing that this generation of heroes has made the United States safer and more respected around the world.  (Applause.)  For the first time in nine years, there are no Americans fighting in Iraq.  (Applause.)  For the first time in two decades, Osama bin Laden is not a threat to this country.  (Applause.)  Most of al Qaeda’s top lieutenants have been defeated.  The Taliban’s momentum has been broken, and some troops in Afghanistan have begun to come home.

These achievements are a testament to the courage, selflessness and teamwork of America’s Armed Forces.  At a time when too many of our institutions have let us down, they exceed all expectations.  They’re not consumed with personal ambition.  They don’t obsess over their differences.  They focus on the mission at hand.  They work together.

Imagine what we could accomplish if we followed their example.  (Applause.)  Think about the America within our reach:  A country that leads the world in educating its people.  An America that attracts a new generation of high-tech manufacturing and high-paying jobs.  A future where we’re in control of our own energy, and our security and prosperity aren’t so tied to unstable parts of the world.  An economy built to last, where hard work pays off, and responsibility is rewarded.

We can do this.  I know we can, because we’ve done it before.  At the end of World War II, when another generation of heroes returned home from combat, they built the strongest economy and middle class the world has ever known.  (Applause.)  My grandfather, a veteran of Patton’s Army, got the chance to go to college on the GI Bill.  My grandmother, who worked on a bomber assembly line, was part of a workforce that turned out the best products on Earth.

The two of them shared the optimism of a nation that had triumphed over a depression and fascism.  They understood they were part of something larger; that they were contributing to a story of success that every American had a chance to share — the basic American promise that if you worked hard, you could do well enough to raise a family, own a home, send your kids to college, and put a little away for retirement.

Romney Wins Again

Mitt Romney has once again won the second republican Caucus of the year by garnering 39% (97,480) of the votes. Ron Paul came in a distant second with 23% (56,743) of the votes. Jon Huntsman came in third with 17% (41,901) of the votes. Though he did is considered to be in last place in the Delegate race, he has announced that because of his third place showing he is remaining in the race. Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum both recieved 10% of the remaining votes with Rick Perry taking the last 1%.

Mitt Romney has 25 delegates towards the goal of 1,144 needed for the nomination. If he is to win South Carolina as well then he is sure to win the nomination. The Georgia native Newt Gingrich is heavily favored in the south so he may give him a run for his money. To date (1/11/2012) the standings for the delegate race is as follows:

Romney – 25

Paul – 10

Santorum – 8

Perry – 4

Gingrich – 3

Huntsman – 2

Bachmann – 0 (out)

Mitt Is It In Iowa

mittromney

The Iowa caucuses are now over and Mitt Romney has won with a slight edge of 8 votes over Rick Santorum. They both recieved 25% of the votes with Romney having 30,015 and Santorum coming in second with 30,007 votes. Ron Paul (26,219, 20%) and Newt Gingrich (16,251, 13%) finished in 3rd and 4th place respectively.  Rick Perry has decided to head back to his state of Texas so that he can reevaluate his campaign strategy (CNN). Another swing for Romney may come in the Massachusetts caucus as Senator and former Republican Presidential candidate John McCain has lent his endorsement (Kasie Hunt, AP).

The winner of the Iowa caucuses does not necessarily win the nomination. There is so much buzz around this caucus simply because they are the first and biggest of the new year so far. Next is New Hampshire and South Carolina. South Carolina being the most important because in the past, whoever has won South Carolina has gone on to win the nomination. You can be sure that all the candidates that even think that have a chance will be riding on a good showing in my former home state.

In the overall scheme of delegates needed for the nomination Mitt Romney is ahead with 18, while Rick Santorum is in second place with 8 (CNN). The race so far is as follows:

Mitt Romney 18
Rick Santorum 8
Ron Paul 7
Rick Perry 4
Newt Gingrich 2
Michelle Bachmann 0
Jon Huntsman 0

From the looks of things the early front runners are Romney and Santorum but it is a long way to the 1,144 delegates needed to secure the nomination. It is still early and anyone’s race to win.

Oh Mr. Cain…

Okay so whether you’ve been following the election or not I’m sure you’ve heard this developing story. Apparently back in the 90′s Herman Cain sexually harassed a number of women. At first I didn’t really believe it because of the way the story came out. It was an anonymous story from anonymous women during an unspecified time. I mean how vague can you be? So he apparently harassed some unknown women by saying some unknown things at an unknown time. Confusing right?

At first I just brushed it off. Then the first woman came out and added some legs to the story. I began to think ‘hmm… Maybe he did do something.’ Her story opened up more questions for me than answers. Why did she choose Gloria Alred as her lawyer. Don’t get me wrong she may be a great person but lately she have only defended the worst of the worst (like Tiger Woods’ 20,000th jumpoff). Another flag was that she didn’t tell anyone about this until now? Really? I mean you held on to this since the 90′s and didn’t tell a soul until be decides to run for president? How can you remember something that happened so long ago with such vivid detail?

I’m not saying that she or any of the other women are lying or bending the truth but I always have my doubts when people come out years later to say something happened to them. Especially when the accusers is trying to accomplish something. It always wreaks of something even more dishonest.

While these women may have been sexually harassed why wait so long to say something? That’s all I would like to know. Why not say something right then and there to stop this from happening to the next woman? That is what its all about right?

I’m just sayin’
Sincere
